Joe Biden ‘capable of handling the rigors’ of presidency, doctors say
Of all the criteria voters care about in a presidential candidate, one that has come up more than once is health. And former Vice President Joe Biden’s doctors say he is in top shape and fully able to handle the stresses of the presidency.
“Vice President Biden is in excellent physical condition. He is more than capable of handling the rigors of the campaign and the office for which he is running,” Dr. Kevin O’Connor said in a statement to Politico in an article published Tuesday.
Biden, 76, underwent two brain surgeries for aneurysms in the 1980s, which, coupled with his age and recent verbal gaffes, have prompted concerns about his fitness to serve in office from critics.
Donald Trump has mocked Biden and questioned his competency.
His brain surgeon, Dr. Neal Kassell, told Politico, “He is every bit as sharp as he was 31 years ago. I haven’t seen any change.”
Kassell added, “I am going to vote for the candidate who I am absolutely certain has a brain that is functioning. And that narrows it down exactly to one.”

Trump’s health and competency have also been at the center of conversation.
Remarks in early 2019 from the now 73-year-old president’s physician came under scrutiny from some in the medical community for not only assessing his current fitness, but predicting his health far into the future.
“The President of the United States is in very good health and I anticipate he will remain so for the duration of his presidency, and beyond,” Dr. Sean Conley wrote in a memo.
In addition to Biden and Trump, Democratic candidates Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Republican primary candidates former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld are all over 70 years old.
As for any of their mental acuity, one neuroscientist told Politico that it would is hard to “determine someone’s cognitive abilities simply by knowing someone’s chronological age.”
